1. A job interview (for general manager)

  • - Hello, Roberta. Come in and sit down.
  • - Thank you.
  • - Now, have you got any experience of this type of work?
  • - Yes, I have. I spent 2 years working in a fitness club “Gloria”.
  • - I see. And are you in good physical health?
  • - Yes, I am fit and healthy.
  • - What kind of things do you do?
  • - I love all kinds of sport I play volleyball and ice hockey. I go running, I swim a lot. When I do a job, I give a hundred and ten percent. I’m a winner, and that’s what you need to turn your Health and Leisure “Nice body” Clubs around. I would really do a good job.
  • - That’s interesting. So, why do you want this job, Roberta?
  • - Well, I’ve done this kind of job before and I really liked it. I think it’s a very important job too – people should go to Health and Leisure Clubs to relax and take care of themselves.
  • - When can you start work?
  • - Any time.
  • - Well, thanks for coming in, Roberta. We’ll be in touch in the next couple of days.

2. A job interview for part-time shop assistant

  • - How did you find out about the job?
  • - I saw your advert online.
  • - Have you worked in a shop before?
  • - Yes, I have. I spent eight weeks working in a shop in London last summer.
  • - Right. What did you do there?
  • - Everything! I served customers. I stacked shelves.
  • - I see. And why do you think you’re the right person for this job?
  • - Because, I’m enthusiastic (entuziasma pilns), flexible (elastīgs), hard-working (čakls) and reliable (uzticams). I’m also good at working with customers.
  • - Well, thanks for coming in, John. We’ll be in touch before the end of the week.

3. A job interview for a factory supervisor

  • - Where do you see yourself in five years time?
  • - Well, let’s say that I see myself as top performing employee in a leading company, like this one. I plan to gain experience and learn new skills. I hope in five years time I would be ready to move up to a position with more responsibility.
  • - How do you manage working with someone who doesn’t like you?
  • - Yes, I am able to cope with people who resent my success. I remember doing a job in a food processing factory. The person I was working with had been there for fifteen years and didn’t much like the idea of working with a business student. One day I finished more pieces than him, and he was really very angry with me. Of course, I realized that he was just insecure, so later I made sure I asked him for advice about different aspect of the job. In the end we became friends.
  • - How do you motivate people to do their best?
  • - I think there are two important aspects to this question. Firstly, it is necessary to create positive atmosphere. If people fell happy about what they’re doing, they’re much motivated. Secondly, it is important to give feedback. For example, when somebody does a good job a supervisor should praise workers.
  • - What are your weaknesses?
  • - Well, of course there are areas that I can improve on, for example, a time management.
  • - Ok, thank you for coming in. We’ll be in touch with you soon.
